DESCRIPTION


Digging Deeper with Designing and Teaching is designed to teach instructors how to create sound objectives and outcomes, and how to align them to assessments using Canvas Rubrics and Outcomes. This course will teach best practices, learning styles, engagement strategies, and pedagogy for facilitating online instruction. You will also learn about some external and research-based tools that you can use for teaching online. The course is divided into 4 modules and completion time is estimated 4-weeks.

Target Audience: Online, Face-to-Face, or Hybrid Instructors who are proficient with Canvas

Individuals who complete the course will receive a certificate of completion from the Mississippi Virtual Community College via the MSVCC Academy Catalog.

COURSE OBJECTIVES


Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and create sound and measurable course objectives
  • Identify and create sound and measurable module/unit level objectives
  • Explore learning styles and instructional strategies in the online learning environment
  • Align course activities and assessments to module/unit level objectives
  • Create rubrics and outcomes using Canvas
  • Recognize the characteristics of an effective online instructor
  • Explore the various external tools used to facilitate teaching and learning

Marie Roberts is a two-time graduate of The University of Southern Mississippi, earning a B.A. degree in Political Science and an M. Ed. in Student Affairs Administration. She holds six certifications from the Online Learning Consortium (formerly SLOAN-C) in instructional technologies, Web 2.0, and other eLearning-related topics, having conducted training and professional development sessions for more than three years. She recently completed her doctorate degree in Higher Education Administration from Delta State University and is also a Quality Matters certified educator.

Roberts serves as the director of eLearning at Meridian Community College where she focuses on holistic course design and online student engagement. She is currently working to revamp the College's pathways and course offerings schedule. Roberts also serves as an adjunct faculty member for LLS courses, having taught online courses for more than five years.

Prior to serving in her current role, Roberts was director of recruiting and campus life at MCC where her time was spent engaging prospective students and growing dual credit course offerings.

Roberts has presented at many local, regional, and national technology-related conferences, including Cengage Course Technology, Creating Futures, Educators Connect, the National Distance Learning Conference, and the FantasTech Virtual Conference.
